The relationship between Batman and Superman dates back decades and has complex up’s and down’s along the way. Now with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, we get to see them once again, this time pitted against each other on the big screen.
Two of America’s most beloved comic book superheros fighting one another- how did we get here and what should we expect? Well, based on past experiences, we have a lot to be excited about.
The history of the Batman and Superman relationship is fascinating. Batman and Superman appeared together in a few 1940s All-Star Comics, however they officially met in 1952’s Superman #76. They started off on each other’s good side, teaming up to stop an evil plot. Between the mid-1950s and the mid-1980s, Batman and Superman appeared together, teaming up almost monthly in World’s Finest Comics as well as The Brave and The Bold, always teaming up together.
Then in the mid-1980s, things changed. Batman and Superman occasionally were pitted against each other, rooted in a deep mistrust of each other. From here on, the relationship was rocky–friends, enemies, friends, enemies.
In The Dark Knight Falls, Batman kills The Joker, and Superman decides he needs to be brought to justice. It all leads up to an epic battle in which Batman suffers a heart attack just as it seems he’s about to finish off Superman. Or did he? Batman actually faked his death all the way through his funeral– no one knew, except for Superman. Batman figured that when everything thinks he’s dead, he’ll be free to move forward with his plans.
